2012 Voice Award for Artistic Works

Eveoke will be honored by Voices of Women (VOW) on October 18^th at their annual Beyond Borders Benefit as Eveoke has been chosen to be the recipient of the 2012 Voice Award for Artistic Works. The Voice Award is presented annually by VOW to recognize an organization or individual that advances VOW’s mission of human rights, education and empowerment of women and children who are in need of advocacy or representation. Eveoke was nominated for Las Mariposas and the community programming and outreach that enveloped the production. Julia Alvarez who wrote a letter of recommendation stated, “Not only did Eveoke Dance Theatre stage this work, but … the troupe involved the community: the dancers visited classrooms, engaging students (of all ages!) and connecting movement with history and passion and activism with art.” One of Eveoke’s core collaborators, Professor Elizabeth Colwill added, “Eveoke Dance Theatre’s production of ‘Las Mariposas’ provided a vibrant example of the transformative possibilities of art when wedded to a commitment to human rights, global education, and women’s empowerment.”

Gina Angelique’s college production at the UC Irvine Concert Hall in 1993, “Eve…A Woman, A Lady, A Little Girl,” was the inspiration for the name Eveoke.

It is Eveoke’s mission to call forth our compassion and elicit a desire for change and action.

Eveoke is the 2011/2012 Resident Theatre Company at The La Jolla Playhouse

This marks the fourth year of the Playhouse’s landmark Resident Theatre Program and the first time a dance company has been chosen.

Spearheaded by Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley, the Resident Theatre Program aims to encourage the artistic development of up-and-coming performing arts organizations, while advancing and contributing to the San Diego theatre scene as a whole. The program is also designed to address San Diego’s lack of available, affordable performance spaces by providing a temporary home each year to one of the many local troupes without a permanent venue.

Eveoke will be in residence September 8 – 25, 2011 in the Playhouse’s Theodore and Adele Shank Theatre with a production of Las Mariposas and May 31 – June 24, 2012 with a production of REFUGE.

Eveoke Dance Theatre receives $32,000 for REFUGE in the Arts from The San Diego Women’s Foundation for the 2011/2012 Arts and Culture Cycle.

Eveoke is honored to be partnering with SDWF once again to create transformational arts education and performance programming that will engage youth to create a touring school assembly show addressing “cycles of violence” as well as dance-based community service projects. REFUGE in the Arts will include intensive dance training, mentorship, free family programming, and meaningful interaction with community leaders who are addressing violence in multiple contexts.
