What is DanceScape?

DanceScape is designed to introduce dancers to various choreographic tools to generate and create original dance composition. In tune with Eveoke’s mission this program will not just focus on the creation of movement but also the creation of thoughtful artists; creating work relevant to themselves personally or externally.

Why Showcase?

The showcase is not only a performance opportunity, but an opportunity for the choreographer to engage the audience for feedback.

Questions for the audience?

What was compelling about the work you just saw? Was there a particular part that captured your attention? What was your overall impression of the work?

No matter what the world brought me that day, I had to show up to that purple studio. My sidekick became a bag full of extra clothes, socks, Tiger balm, and some food. Looking back on the months of rehearsals, I realize that Agape became my parallel reality. Living in two worlds allowed me to use one as a tool to explore and move forward in the other. Slowly, I began to see my daily life as a dance.

Using Agape as my parallel reality, really gave me the ability to see and experience beauty and pain at the same time. I learned to isolate my emotions as if they were muscles I was using to dance. Interestingly enough, I was faced with the challenge of carrying a hip injury for almost the entire run of Agape. So I learned to do things that would keep me happy as a tool to work through my injury. This approach works on the large scale of life as well; we have to keep ourselves busy and healthy to be able to work through hard times with grace.

Performing with Eveoke is really like nothing I’ve ever experienced. Each performance feels like a new place I’ve traveled. It feels like that kind of experience; when you get back from an island that none of your friends have ever been to and you can tell them all about it, but you know they will never know how the wind felt or how cold the ocean was, or how the people sounded when they spoke. Agape was another world that I shared with a group of very special people. For example, there was a part of the first act where we dance in partners with our eyes closed. The way it feels to lean on a body with your eyes closed, unable to judge the way it looks in the mirror; the amount of emotion that you become aware of when all of your focus is on weight and working together–it opens us, and in that moment we are fully vulnerable. This vulnerability happens almost without choice. Aside from what this evoked inside during performances or on stage, the process of learning this was all about trust. We had about a two hour rehearsal where we just improved with our partners. My partner, Becky Hurt, and I, created a duet full of risk, trust, and surrender. You learn to trust people when you are in a dance company. Even if you don’t use language to explain your mood, they will all look at you with different forms of love, and in the end you feel safe. I will carry the memories with me forever.

We will continue to create worlds that we travel through, and will share them with you. So that you too can go places you’ve never seen on stage or experienced within yourself.

Ericka Aisha Moore, Artistic Director

I have been looking into the present for individuals whose voices have the capacity to motivate the masses to do good in their communities and in the world — voices that cross ethnic, cultural, economic and geographic boundaries to share the fight for compassionate change. Yet I have been inspired by past orators; orators who have given me a wealth of insight into the connection between rhetoric, passion, and activism, and how collectively they move a cause forward, nonviolently. Before I began doing my research on non-violence, I thought it just meant a passive way of confronting injustice, an ideology practiced by Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. My eyes have been opened to how the past of non-violent action has been used throughout the history of humankind. Nonviolent action is active, not passive, and it is rooted in compassion and love.

The ancient Greeks have a word for this kind of love, Agape. Agape is not a romantic love, but a love anchored in the idea that we are all human beings, and we should treat each other how we want to be treated. It is a love that is selfless, charitable, and determines our obligations. When I imagine a world ruled by this kind of love, all pressures for violence seem to go away and a bright future seems possible. This maybe a little naïve, but for most of my life, I have witnessed war, inequality in education, a country divided, and capitalism that leaves the poor behind. Yet, I am not hopeless. I have Martin Luther King Jr. to encourage me, because even through extreme violence, he was able to inspire people to practice non-violent action to create the world they desired. He once said,

Lord before this victory is won some will have to get thrown in jail some more, but we shall overcome. Don’t worry about us, before the victory is won some of us will lose jobs, but we shall overcome. Before the victory is won, even some will have to face physical death. But if physical death is the price that some must pay, to free their children from a permanent psychological death, then nothing shall be more redemptive. We shall overcome.

I admire and want to honor those voices and those people who rose up to the challenge to make change in an environment not ready for change –those people who were willing to put their lives on the line in order to gain a future they knew was rightfully theirs. To respond to violence nonviolently shows the strength and power of Agape.
